UltraTech to deploy 100 electric trucks in India
UltraTech wants to use the new fleet of electric trucks between Dhar Cement Works, its cement manufacturing unit in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, and Dhule Cement Works, its grinding unit in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It will transport 75,000 metric tonnes of clinker per month. This route spans approximately 400 km for a roundtrip.
Though UltraTech does not specifically mention it in the press release, the images show a Rhino 5536 electric truck from IPLTech Electric . The BEV has a range of 185 kilometres and a top speed of 90 kph.
The new environment initiative will allow UltraTech to reduce CO2 emissions by 17,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. In January, the company successfully ran a pilot with five electric trucks, installed charging infrastructure, and trained its truck drivers during that test phase.
“UltraTech is fully committed to realising its Net Zero goal by 2050,” said K C Jhanwar, the company’s Managing Director. “The scale-up of EV trucks in our logistics operations underscores our commitment to drive the implementation of sustainable practices in the industry,” he added.
After giving the green light to the route between Dhar Cement Works and Dhule Cement Works, UltraTech is looking at more locations to deploy electric trucks to move material and products. The company plans to start another pilot using a similar model electric truck to transport clinker between two more manufacturing units. Cumulatively, it aims to commission 500 electric trucks by June 2025, supporting the Indian government’s e-FAST (Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport) initiative to accelerate zero-emission trucking.
With a valuation of $8.4 billion, UltraTech is India’s largest cement and ready-mix concrete company. It is also the world’s third largest cement producer, possessing a total grey cement annual production capacity of 156.06 million tonnes. The company owns 24 integrated manufacturing units, 33 grinding units, one clinkerisation unit, and eight bulk packaging terminals.
