Kreisel Electric relies on BASF for battery recycling

Austrian battery specialist Kreisel Electric has signed a deal with BASF to recycle batteries using hydrometallurgical processes in Europe and thus retain the secondary raw materials for new batteries in Europe.

Kreisel Electric describes recycling as an important pillar of its battery strategy. The Austrian company already achieves a recycling rate of 79 per cent for its battery systems, which is well above the required 50 per cent. “Our recycled batteries are not only meeting today’s standards but are designed to support the sustainability benchmarks of the next decade. In fact, we are already meeting the ambitious EU 2030 targets, underscoring our leadership in sustainable battery technologies,” the company says.

With the BASF cooperation, Kreisel Electric aims to further close the battery cycle from recycling to reprocessing and reutilisation. “By keeping the valuable ‘black mass’ in Europe, we are reducing reliance on external resources and supporting the region’s sustainability goals,” it says. Kreisel is not more specific about the cooperation.

Founded in 2014, the company is known to have built up a global customer base with its battery technology and battery-buffered charging stations. In addition to commercial and off-highway vehicles, these customers come from the marine and electric motorsport sectors. Three years ago, the US agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere acquired a majority stake in the Austrian electric mobility specialist. However, Kreisel continues to operate under its own flag.
