NXP presents ultra-wideband battery management system
According to NXP, the wireless ultra-wideband battery management system, or UWB-BMS for short, simplifies the assembly of electric vehicles. It enables a higher energy density of the battery and can therefore increase the range of electric cars. It also decouples mechanical and electrical development so that new vehicles can be brought to market faster.
Wireless communication within battery packs enables robust and reliable transmission of battery cell information such as voltage and temperature measurements from a module to the battery management unit without the need for cabling, NXP explains the benefits of the technology. This should help to ensure optimal battery performance and avoid premature failure or safety risks.
The use of wireless solutions minimises the use of complex wiring harnesses in the battery pack and reduces the need for error-prone manual work during production, making the assembly of electric vehicles more efficient and reducing overall life cycle costs. By eliminating connectors and cables between battery cells, the energy density can be increased, which is an important parameter in the design and performance of electric vehicles and enables a greater range.
“Our wireless battery management system solution is the industry’s first to include UWB technology, offering EV manufacturers the most advanced technology to power tomorrow’s electric vehicles,” explained Naomi Smit, General Manager & VP Battery Management Systems at NXP. “Trimension UWB delivers simple, safe, and robust wireless communication within the BMS, outperforming existing narrow-band based solutions. We are proud to work with our customers to make the wireless promise reality.”
UWB technology uses high-bandwidth pulses instead of a modulated, sinusoidal carrier frequency, as used in 2.4 GHz narrowband technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). According to NXP, this reduces susceptibility to reflections and frequency-selective fading, thus ensuring more stable and reliable data transmission.
NXP has a wealth of experience with battery management systems: The company has been the sole supplier of battery management systems for Volkswagen’s MEB platform for many years.
