UK: Sunswap delivers zero-emission TRUs to DFDS

Logistics company DFDS has ordered ten transport refrigeration units (TRUs) called 'Endurance' from Sunswap. The units are fitted with a battery and solar panels to keep temperatures low.

According to Sunswap, the solar panels supply 65 to 100 per cent of the required charge to the refrigeration units. It takes 80 minutes to charge the units fully. Sunswap reports that Endurance can maintain its cooling properties for 22 hours on a single charge for two days.

The ‘Endurance’ is Sunswap’s latest zero-emission cold-chain solution and marks the company’s entry “into the global cold-chain market.”

“This is a defining moment for Sunswap and sustainable transport refrigeration,” said Michael Lowe, CEO of Sunswap. “After five years of engineering innovation and extensive trials, seeing the first Sunswap units enter full-time service with DFDS marks the beginning of diesel-free cold chain operations at scale.”

The UK startup emphasises that solar and battery electric power unlock more sustainable and commercially viable alternatives for logistics operations. DFDS will save 71 per cent of operating costs with the zero-emission transport refrigeration units. Leveraging the TRUs, DFDS is in a position to reduce its carbon footprint by 895 tonnes of CO2 over a ten-year unit lifetime.

“The Sunswap trailers provide a huge opportunity for us to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations and further strengthen our offering to customers,” said Matt O’Dell, Managing Director of Logistics, England, DFDS. “Our team has worked closely with Sunswap on this project, and I’m very proud of all the hard work that has gone into seeing the trailers arrive at our Peterborough depot and ready for service.”

DFDS has plans to reduce CO2 emissions by 75 per cent by 2030 and recently announced an order for 10 electric heavy-duty trucks. The company further says that “adding Sunswap trailers to our UK fleet is an exciting part of the plan.”
