Amprius Technologies, an industry leader in next-generation lithium-ion batteries has supplied its SiMaxx A-Sample EV Cells to the United States Advanced Battery Consortium LLC (USABC). The SiMaxx A-Sample EV Cells are based on silicon nanowire battery technology built on the company’s Silicon Anode Platform. This development comes after Amprius Technologies bagged a $3 million contract award in May 2022 and another $1 million award in October 2022 from the United States Advanced Battery Consortium and the US Department of Energy, respectively.

The $3 million contract award has now yielded a low-cost, fast-charge silicon nanowire battery. The company is confident that this new milestone paves the way for additional sampling and evaluation by automotive manufacturers.

The company reports that in a quarter of an hour,  the A-Sample EV cells can charge 90% of their rated energy, exceeding the USABC target of 80% within the same timeframe. Amprius believes that the new product could “result in a significant increase in range compared to most commercial EV batteries available today.”

In the remark on the new achievement, Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius Technologies mentioned: “This is another important battery technology development milestone at Amprius after we successfully launched high-performance silicon anode battery business in aviation and light vehicle markets. We believe our batteries are well-positioned to support all-electric mobility markets. With their superior energy and power performance, fast charging, wide operating temperature range, and safety features, Amprius is continuing to transform the EV sector and other electric mobility segments as we scale toward high-volume manufacturing.”

According to reports, the A-Sample EV cell has marked a record specific energy density of 360 Wh/kg at the beginning of life—surpassing the USABC program target of 275 Wh/kg at the end-of-life—while delivering a power density of 1200 W/kg. This comes after the record from the Silatronix OS3 battery cells achieving an energy density of 450 Wh/kg and 1,150 Wh/l. Both A-Sample EV cells and Silatronix OS3 battery cells are based on the company’s Si-Nanowire platform.

The CEO of the company added: “We look forward to USABC validation of the A-sample cell performance towards showcasing the unique advantages of Amprius cells in electric vehicles.
