Lancia’s electric flagship to be called ‘Gamma’
The name had not yet been confirmed, but there have already been statements from Lancia management that point to the model name Gamma. Together with the confirmation, Lancia has also published a photo that probably shows the Gamma lettering on the rear of the vehicle.
However, Lancia does not provide any further details about the vehicle in the press release. It only repeats the already known statement that the Gamma will utilise the STLA Medium platform. In terms of technical data, it is therefore worth taking a look at already familiar STLA Medium models such as the Peugeot E-3008 and E-5008 or the Opel Grandland. With the 400-volt architecture, batteries with an energy content of up to 97 kWh are possible, and there will be front-wheel and all-wheel drives with an output of between 160 and 285 kW. And since even the E-3008 as an SUV model has a range of up to 700 kilometres, the Lancia Gamma as a fastback sedan is likely to achieve the same.
With the choice of the STLA Medium as the platform, the Melfi plant was already a likely production location: A total of five models are to be built on this platform at the Italian plant – a Lancia model based on the STLA Medium was already mentioned in 2023 alongside two DS models, the upcoming generation of the Jeep Compass and an Opel model (the Insignia successor). At that time, however, there was still speculation about the name ‘Aurelia’ in reference to a model series from the 1950s.
With Gamma, Lancia is also referring to a historic model series that was offered from 1976 to 1984. In addition, Lancia thus remains close to its traditionally often-used nomenclature of naming the vehicles after Greek letters – even if this has often been deviated from. The brand currently only offers the Lancia Ypsilon .
“The new Lancia Gamma represents a milestone in our journey towards the future,” says Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano. “It embodies our brand’s commitment to sustainability and high performance, while celebrating the unmistakable elegance that has defined Lancia for decades. By producing it at the historic Melfi plant, we are strengthening our connection to Italy’s rich automotive heritage and advancing our vision for an electrified future. Gamma will showcase the best of what Lancia stands for: innovation, style, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”
