Ashok Leyland subsidiary secures new order for Switch EiV12 electric buses
India’s largest bus manufacturer Ashok Leyland announced that its subsidiary OHM Global Mobility has been awarded a contract to provide 500 12-m ultra-low floor electric buses called ‘Switch EiV12’. OHM is Ashok Leyland’s electric mobility arm, focused on the Mobility-as-a-Service business. The buses will, however, be supplied through Switch Mobility – another Ashok Leyland subsidiary.
As 950 Switch buses are already in use, some of which were delivered to JSW Steel, and more units are on order this new contract ramps up the order for the electric buses to over 2,000 vehicles. Shenu Agarwal, MD and CEO of Ashok Leyland says, “This new order underscores our dedication to producing highly efficient and technologically advanced products, driving the growth of public transportation in the country.”
The Switch EiV12 features 650V electric architecture technology and is designed to operate with IP67-rated batteries, providing non-stop service as it travels with a range of over 200 kilometres per charge.
Aiming to enhance the transportation system in Chennai, OHM Global Mobility will operate and maintain the bus for 12 years. It is said that the electric buses can serve 37 passengers at a time and also accommodate an additional 24 standing passengers. What’s more, the SWITCH EiV12 model buses boast an ultra-low-floor design, providing ease of access and convenience for passengers. Out of the 500 electric buses, 100 support air conditioning, providing added comfort for passengers.
Speaking on the new order for the Switch EiV12 model buses, Shenu Agarwal Leyland, says: “We are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and be a partner in their journey towards green public transportation.”
