In an effort to demonstrate Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to High Power Charging facilities across several countries, the German automaker has chosen PowerX as the strategic partner for the Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging Japan project. The project aims to establish a high-power EV charging network in Japan.

Under the partnership, PowerX take charge of the high-power charging stations in 25 locations while installing 100 charging ports in the locations over the next two years.

As reported, PowerX has pledged to manufacture and deliver its ultrafast battery-powered EV charger, called the ‘Hypercharger’. The system currently consists of up to two CHAdeMO charging points, each of which has a charging point with a capacity of up to 120 kW. There is also a battery storage unit with a capacity of 179 or 358 kWh. In the highest expansion stage, the system will even support bidirectional charging. For the fast-charging network planned with Mercedes, however, the system will be equipped with specially developed charging stations. No details were provided.

Once the project is complete, the charging network is planned to offer Mercedes-Benz BEV customers, the ‘Mercedes me Charge’ payment system. Users of other BEV brands get to enjoy the payment service through the PowerX App.
