New lap record for Porsche Taycan Turbo GT in China
Porsche development driver Lars Kern set a new record time of 2:11.28 minutes. This makes the electric sedan the fastest production car on the Formula 1 circuit. It is also the first lap record to be officially recognised by the Shanghai International Circuit. The fact that Porsche chose this track of all places for the record attempt (and that the Chinese recognise the lap time as the first record) also has to do with the close relationship between the two partners: Porsche has been operating one of its Porsche Experience Centres on the grounds of the Shanghai International Circuit for several years.
The Turbo GT is the top version of the revised Taycan, which was presented in the spring. Although the model is road-legal, it was developed with a focus on racetrack performance. With two electric motors, 815 kW is available in overboost mode, with torque of up to 1,340 Nm. This enables the Turbo GT to accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in just 2.2 seconds. For racetrack performance, the top speed has also been noticeably increased from 260 to 305 kph.
“Every racetrack has its own unique challenges. In order to show how complete the overall package for the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach package is, we set out to break records on three very different courses around the world,” stated Kevin Giek, Head of the Taycan model series at Porsche. “All good things come in threes. With top times in the Eifel region of Germany, in California and in China, the Taycan has achieved success internationally.”
However, the conditions were not ideal for the record lap time in Shanghai. “The capricious weather didn’t make life easy for us today. It rained lightly again and again, so the track was still slightly damp until the very end. I am even more impressed by the balance and performance of the Taycan now,” said the driver Lars Kern.
For safety reasons, the record-breaking car is fitted with a complete safety system including a cage and racing bucket seat. The conversion measures increase the overall weight and cannot be fully compensated for by removing parts of the interior. Optional Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres were also fitted for the lap record.
