Nevo launches electric SUV-pickup hybrid on the Chinese market
With the E07, Nevo wants to appeal to a special target group in China – primarily private customers with a need for an electric pickup – but is using a trick to do so. In China, pickups are not categorised as passenger cars, but as light commercial vehicles. With this category, they are subject to ‘numerous restrictions’ compared to an SUV or a van, as Chinese media wrote. As a result, there are currently virtually only pickups in China that are tailored to corporate customers.
The hybrid body shape of the E07 should be seen against this background: Officially, the car is an SUV, so it can be registered as a passenger car. However, thanks to its versatility, the E07 can also be used more like a pickup truck if desired, which is a major selling point for Nevo. However, at 300 kilograms, the load capacity of the cargo bed is very low. This leads to the suspicion that the E07 does not combine the best of both worlds, but is rather neither fish nor fowl.
There are three options with battery-electric drive. The basic version has a 165 kW rear motor, while a single-motor version with 252 kW power is also available as an option. The all-wheel drive model combines the more powerful electric motor at the rear with a 188 kW motor on the front axle, resulting in a system output of 440 kW. Two battery packs are offered, a 70.5 kWh LFP pack and a 90 kWh NMC battery. This should enable a range of between 551 and 651 kilometres in the Chinese CLTC standard test.
The range extender version is available with two drive units: The single-motor version has a 231 kW drive unit at the rear, while the dual-motor version also has a 131 kW front motor. In both cases, a 39 kWh LFP battery pack is installed for a range of 230 kilometres. Together with the 110 kW 1.5-litre petrol engine as a range extender, the combined range (with a full tank and full battery) increases to 1,130 kilometres.
The Changan Nevo E07 is 5.05 metres long, two metres wide and 1.64 metres high, with a wheelbase of 3.12 metres. It is a five-seater with two rows of seats – behind the rear seats, the roofline drops sharply to allow for the pick-up loading area. Inside, there is a 15.4-inch touchscreen in the centre, but no cockpit display in front of the steering wheel: this has been replaced by a head-up display with a 28.8-inch diagonal width.
As the Nevo E07 BEV ‘Air’, the battery-electric version starts at 199,900 yuan, the equivalent of 25,920 euros. The top-of-the-range BEV model ‘Ultra’ is listed at 319,900 yuan (41,480 euros). The Nevo E07 EREV does not have the basic ‘Air’ model, only the three higher trim levels ‘Pro’, ‘Max’ and ‘Ultra’ are offered – each 20,000 yuan cheaper than the BEV version. Prices for the range extender therefore range from 209,900 yuan to 299,900 yuan (27,220 to 38,890 euros).
