Arriva plans 100 new electric buses in the Gelderland region
The company already has a presence in the province. Arriva has been operating bus routes in the Rivierenland region since 2003 and in the Achterhoek region since 2010. Trains have also been operating in Rivierenland in the name of Arriva since 2012. Now that the contract has been awarded, the public transport operator can further expand its local presence. The contract is expected to be worth around two billion euros.
According to the new contract, Arriva will take over further train and bus services in the province of Gelderland from December 2025 for a period of ten years, with the option to extend for up to seven years. The contract also includes a modernisation programme for 24 trains. In addition, nine more trains are to be procured from 2025 and four more in 2028.
In addition to the existing fleet of nine H2 buses, 100 electric buses are to be deployed from the start of the contract to replace buses from the current fleet. However, no further details have yet been provided. The only thing that is clear is that the electrification of the bus fleet should contribute to offering completely emission-free bus services in the province by 2030.
In addition to Gelderland, the British transport service provider Arriva, which belonged to Deutsche Bahn until last year, has also been awarded a new public transport concession in the Dutch region of West Brabant. The company recently ordered 157 electric buses from VDL and a further 30 battery-electric buses from Solaris for use there.
However, the company is also active in other regions: Arriva had already ordered 64 new-generation Citeas in various versions together with the province of North Brabant at the end of 2022. These vehicles will soon be put into operation for local public transport in the city of Tilburg and for use on high-quality local transport routes between Uden-Veghel-Eindhoven and Uden-Veghel-Den Bosch.
