Cardiff gives the go-ahead to install 100 EV charging points in the region

The Cardiff Council in Wales, UK, has given the green light for 100 new EV charging points to be installed over the next two years. The measure is part of the new 'Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Roadmap.'

According to the latter, most of the 100 planned charging points will offer up to 7kW, while “some fast chargers” with 50 kW will also be installed. The Council will install or operate the chargers but will launch a tender.

Moreover, the initial focus will be on “areas with low levels of off-street parking.” According to the Cardiff Council, these areas include Heath, Gabalfa, Cathays, Roath, Penylan, Adamsdown, Riverside, Canton, Grangetown and Butetown.

“While many charging facilities in the city will be provided commercially or by private households with their own off-street parking, there will be a need for us to ensure that charging facilities are available in areas with little off-street parking – starting with the roll out of another 100 charging points over the next two years,” said Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning and Transport.

The Council hopes there will be 600 to 700 public chargers in the region by 2025/2026 “- up from the current figure of around 200 publicly accessible electric vehicle charging points today.” And that is just the beginning, as De’Ath emphasised: “With more and more people making greener choices such as switching to an electric vehicle, demand analysis suggests that there may be a need for around 2,000 public charging sockets in Cardiff by 2030.”
