Cybertruck as conversation starter

The Irvine Police Department (IPD) has purchased a Tesla Cybertruck for its fleet. It won't be used as a patrol car, but is meant to spark a conversation between officers and the community - just like if police arrive on horseback or with a dog.

The US portal Electrek rightfully asks whether a conversation starter should really cost 100,000 dollars. Or: should police really invest 100,000 dollars in one vehicle to have a positive interaction with the community?

Needless to say, the idea of police in a Tesla Cybertruck seems a bit ridiculous. Yes, the car does turn heads. It is still rather rare, though one Electrek reader notes that it is not all that rare in Southern California anymore. Either way, the EV does not really give off the “feel free to approach and talk to me” vibe.

But what seems to be even more odd, is that the IPD hopes for the Cybertruck to have the same effect of people has horses and dogs.

“The truck will support our Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program and community outreach efforts. While the fully equipped vehicle won’t be used as a patrol car, it can respond to emergencies and assist the community when needed,” the Irvine Police Department said in a statement posted on X. “IPD passionately seeks unique and innovative ways to connect with our community and the youth of Irvine. Officers on horseback, working with a support K9, or driving a unique vehicle such as the Cybertruck start positive conversations and promote community interaction.”

The Tesla Cybertruck was converted into a police vehicle by UP.FIT, a division of Unplugged Performance. “The UP.FIT Cybertruck Next-Gen Patrol vehicle is specifically designed to meet the needs of first responders, equipped with a comprehensive suite of upgraded features that enhance police work in the field,” the press release states. That includes a roof-mounted Whelen lighting system and remote-operated spotlight system. Since the Cybertruck is said to be bullet-proof ex works, UP.FIT did not have to do any adjustments to the body.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Irvine Police Department to debut the nation’s first official on-duty Cybertruck for their DARE program,” said Ben Schaffer, CEO of Unplugged Performance. “The Cybertruck embodies the future of law enforcement with Irvine paving the way by integrating this advanced vehicle into their fleet.”

My favorite part is that they used the Terminator theme in the promotional post to show it off. Is there one person in the entire IPD with the smallest bit of self awareness?
