ADL reveals further details on the revised Enviro200EV
The market launch of the updated Enviro200EV is planned for 2025. According to Technical Director Chris Gall, the first customers for the market launch have already been identified: this is likely to include Stagecoach, which has already ordered 54 units of the electric bus.
“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it – we’re not planning to change any of the features that make it one of Britain’s best-selling buses,” explained Chris Gall, Group Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis, speaking about the technical underpinnings of the vehicle: “But we are of course integrating it into the Enviro EV family. It will have a lot of the same parts, the same toolkit. The face of the bus is in common with the rest of the line up. That’s deliberate, to give operators a great operational benefit – so there is not so many parts in the depot, it’s a single fix to resolve all problems on all of the buses.”
The Enviro200EV will be available in lengths of 9.9 m, 10.9 m and 11.7 m, as well as a 10.4 m option that meets the specifications of Transport for London (TfL). The bus will be 2.47 metres wide. The wheelbase has been maximised to make use of the low-floor area. The gross vehicle weight of the Enviro200EV will be 17.2 tonnes, allowing smaller wheels to be used than on a full-size bus.
The bus will be able to carry a total of 92 passengers, with 43 seats. The TfL buses will have 34 seats at the top and carry a maximum of 78 passengers at a length of 11.7 metres.
The battery on board is a 400 kWh energy storage system from CATL with lithium iron phosphate chemistry. The sister models Enviro100EV and Enviro400EV, on the other hand, run on lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide technology. The electricity is supplied by a drive from the German supplier Voith.
According to ADL manager Chris Gall, the focus during the development of the Enviro200EV was on the passenger compartment, which will also be used in the other battery-electric buses. He says that the manufacturer aimed for a “high-quality and modern interior” with warmer colours and design lines matching the exterior.
Paul Davies, president and managing director of Alexander Dennis, added that the manufacturer expects the new vehicle to significantly reduce energy consumption compared to its heavyweight rivals and that this will bring benefits in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO).
It is not yet clear where the Enviro200EV will be produced, but at least some of it could be built outside the UK. According to Paul Davies, production of the Enviro200EV could take place in other countries due to economic pressure. However, a decision has not yet been made.
