Hyundai partners with Canadian battery recycler Lithion

Hyundai has signed a deal with Lithion, a local battery recycler in Canada. The agreement follows an ongoing validation project that kicked off more than three years ago.

The new agreement makes Lithion a partner for over 250 Hyundai and Genesis dealers across Canada. If a vehicle’s battery is nearing the end of its life cycle, dealers can now contact the Lithion team. Lithion will then deliver the battery to its recycling facility in Saint-Bruno for processing. This is not the first deal between the two partners. They had already signed an initial deal to validate Lithion’s extraction solution technology in 2021.

“For many years, Lithion has been privileged and fortunate to partner globally and locally with Hyundai, a visionary company dedicated to finding sustainable circular economy solutions for its lithium-ion batteries,” says Yves Noël, P. Eng., MBA, Lithion’s vice president and chief business development officer. “This partnership paves the way forward globally and here in Canada by reaffirming Lithion’s critical, pivotal and essential role in the battery manufacturing value chain.”

The Canadian recycling company attracted General Motors as an investor two years ago and aims to be able to recover 98 per cent of the minerals contained in EV batteries and 95 per cent of battery components. Lithion inaugurated a recycling plant in Saint-Bruno in the greater Montreal area in June, the construction of which was announced last year. The plant will process over 15,000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries per year, which come from electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as production rejects.

“As a leader in the transition towards electrification, it is important for us to ensure that the electric vehicles we sell into the market have the lowest carbon footprint as possible,” explained Ken Maisonville, executive director of customer experience and aftersales at Hyundai Auto Canada. “This partnership with Lithion allows us to ensure optimal recycling of our batteries, all while doing business with a Canadian company.”

Since the completion of the Saint-Bruno recycling plant in the summer, Lithion’s commercial activities have developed significantly, and it has signed several multi-year contracts with partners, according to the company.
