Tesla pushes the Model 3 to over 700 kilometres of range

Tesla is expanding its Model 3 offering in Europe to now include a rear-wheel-drive version with extended range. The new variant is expected to cover up to 702 kilometres without needing a charging stop – and will be priced from €44,990.

Tesla has named the new version of its electric saloon ‘Maximum Range Rear-Wheel Drive’ and highlights that this model boasts the longest range in the Model 3 lineup. Specifically, the US-based electric car manufacturer states that the new version has an energy consumption of 12.5 kWh per 100 km and a WLTP range of 702 kilometres. In Germany, the Model 3 ‘Maximum Range Rear-Wheel Drive’ will be available from €44,990, with deliveries starting in November. In the UK, it will be priced from £44,990 (approximately €53,500).

Tesla hasn’t specified the exact reasons behind the improved range. In one of its rather rare press releases, the company simply stated that the Model 3 with a range of 702 kilometres is ‘the most efficient electric vehicle currently offered in Europe’. Furthermore, Tesla added: ‘Such superior range at an affordable price is the culmination of our ongoing engineering efforts to enhance energy efficiency while simultaneously reducing costs.’

The Model 3 series itself is now seven years old. Tesla launched its first electric saloon for the mass market back in 2017, branding it as the ‘Model 3’. Over the years, many versions have come and gone. The current selection in the German configurator is as follows:

Model 3RWDLong Range RWDLong Range AWDPerformance AWD
Range (WLTP)513 km702 km629 km528 km

Consumption (kWh/100km)13.212.51416.7
Price including transfer fee40,970 euros45,970 euros50,970 euros59,470 euros

It is worth noting that Tesla displays some inconsistencies in two areas of the table. In its press release, the company quotes a price of €44,990 and an energy consumption of 12.5 kWh/100 km for the new single-motor, long-range variant. However, the configurator lists a price of €45,970, and a consumption figure of 14.4 kWh/100 km in an energy overview. As soon as Tesla responds to these slightly contradictory details, we will update this information accordingly.

Hyundai have recently logged 105 watts per km in Europe in a hypermile attempt in Germany so that puts paid to that claim. It included motorway speeds and commute driving.

No it doesn't. You're comparing apples to oranges. Tesla is quoting WLTP range which is a standardised test. The best performing Hyundai according to the WLTP testing is the Ionic 6 SR which scores 149w/km.
