Kia Pride goes electric

Kia has electrified its small car, the Pride, which was produced in the UK between 1987 and 2000. This unique vehicle has been retrofitted, shedding its petrol engine in favour of an electric powertrain, allowing it to move forward with the help of electricity.

The Kia Pride changed hands many times. It was compact, very affordable, and known for its minimal equipment. Production of the petrol model, measuring just under four metres, began in South Korea in 1987. It was available as either a three-door or five-door variant, without ABS, and only offered optional power steering or air conditioning for an additional cost.

A single example of the Kia cult classic has now been converted to electric power in the UK by Electrogenic to mark Kia’s 80th birthday. The Pride EV Restomod features an electric motor with a power output of up to 80 kW and is equipped with two small batteries, each with a capacity of 10 kWh. Kia itself emphasises that the model has full road approval and is “somewhere between a curio and a plaything, intended to be as engaging to drive as an early hot hatch.”
