Tual Technology launches swappable batteries for trucks

Glasgow-based Tual Technology is launching swappable batteries for electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The PowerBank Pro-Charging offering comes in 120kWh and 180kWh versions and can add up to 120 miles of range, depending on the application.

Tual Technology says its swappable batteries for trucks, vans and other commercial vehicles can be exchanged in under 5 minutes, leaving operators to continue with a full charge without downtime. The company has developed the battery swapping system in a modular way to that the batteries can be used for different sized vehicles.

For commercial vehicles in the UK, Tual says its modular battery swapping system has been developed “in collaboration with some of Europe’s largest fleet operators.” The Scottish company says its system is compatible with existing eHGV platforms.

“The transition to electric heavy goods vehicles is essential for achieving our environmental targets, but they are handicapped by limited range. This impacts the use/cases and routes they can operate on , as the current charging infrastructure is simply not scaled for heavy goods vehicles. Our swappable Power Banks are designed to bridge this gap. ” explains Philip Clarke, CEO and found of Tual. He notes, “This technology is ready for deployment now, offering a viable alternative to the long-mooted and long/delayed public megawatt charging network.”

It might also be noted, that even when this network is eventually implemented, battery swapping offers a number of advantages, such as being able to upgrade, reuse and recycle batteries without necessarily having to replace the whole vehicle, as well as pioneering new trucking routes that are not covered in a given megawatt charging network.

Swappable batteries for trucks have been introduced in China already, with major players joining the fray. In 2022, SAIC, CATL, Sinopec & CNPC announced they were entering the battery-swapping space in China – for both passenger cars as well as commercial and heavy-duty electric vehicles. In 2023, battery giant CATL presented its battery-swapping system for trucks, while in Japan, the following year, Mitsubishi Fuso (MFTBS) and Ample partnered to test battery swap technology for electric trucks. Just a couple of months ago, in August 2024, Mitsubishi Fuso started a battery swap demonstration for electric trucks on public roads in Japan.
