Toyota postpones US production debut of three-row electric SUV

Toyota is postponing the start of production of its first electric model made in the US until 2026. The Japanese carmaker had originally planned to start production of its three-row electric SUV in Kentucky at the end of 2025.

A company spokesperson has now stated that the product launch of the as-yet-unnamed electric SUV will be postponed by a few months to the following year. The date in question is now an unspecified date in 2026, but as reported by Bloomberg and others, Toyota is generally sticking to its plans to offer more electric cars in the United States. Another electric SUV is also scheduled to start production at the plant in Princeton, Indiana, in 2026.

In February, Toyota announced that it was investing USD 1.3 billion to convert its plant in Kentucky to the production of electric cars. In April, it announced that it would also invest USD 1.4 billion in the plant in Indiana for a second electric car production facility.

However, according to a recent media report, Toyota is reducing its interim global production target for pure electric cars by 30 per cent – to 1 million electric cars in 2026 from the 1.5 million units previously planned for this year. However, even this reduced target requires a huge increase compared to current EV sales.
