Toronto Transit Commission gets two new electric buses

Canada’s largest city, Toronto, has received the first two of 340 electric buses. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will operate them. The remaining buses will be delivered between now and the end of 2026.

The new electric buses are part of an order for 340 units placed last year. The city and the federal government are investing a joint 700 million Canadian dollars in electrifying TTC’s fleet. The Government of Canada contributes $349 million to this project through the Zero Emission Transit Fund, and the City of Toronto contributes $351 million.

There is no mention of who manufactured the two buses now delivered. According to the press statement, “these [340] new battery-electric buses are being manufactured by New Flyer Industries Canada and Nova Bus.”

Once all buses are delivered in the next 15 months, TTC will have 400 electric buses, which accounts for about 20 per cent of its fleet and makes it “by far the largest [electric bus fleet] in North America.” The operator wants to have an emission-free fleet by 2040.

“These two new battery-electric buses, and the additional eBuses that will be received by 2026, are significant contributors to our goal of being completely zero-emissions by 2040,” said Greg Percy, TTC Interim CEO. “We are proud to be paving the way for transit electrification across North America, and bringing new, clean, quiet vehicles to customers and employees across the City of Toronto.”
