Jio-bp installs 5000th charging point in India
Indian BP subsidiary Jio-bp is rapidly growing its EV charging network in India. In just a year, it has scaled up the number of its EV charging points by 285%, from 1,300 to 5,000. Just two weeks ago, the company opened South India’s largest public EV charging station in Bengaluru (Karnataka). Located near the bustling Kempegowda International Airport, this facility alone contributes 169 charging points.
95% of the Jio-bp pulse network consists of fast-charging stations – the highest proportion in India. Citing Jio-bp CEO Harish Mehta, a recent S&P Global report said nearly 40% of the chargers have a charging output of more than 60 kW.
Jio-bp claims it is the first company in the industry to install the top-rated 480 kW chargers. Moreover, with a leading uptime of 96%, it has established itself as the most reliable EV charging network in India. The company typically chooses corporate parks, malls, hotels, public parking, and wayside amenities for its charging infrastructure.
Jio-bp is a brand of Reliance BP Mobility Limited (RBML), a fuels and mobility joint venture between India’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and the British company BP. Both companies heavily rely on the oil and gas industry for the majority of their business. RIL holds a 51% stake in the partnership, and BP owns the remaining 49%.
bp paid Reliance Industries 1 billion US dollars (approximately 895 million euros) for the minority stake in RBML in 2020. The company has invested more than 12 billion US dollars (approximately 11 billion euros) in the energy industry in India so far. “India is by any regard the fastest growing energy nation in the world and we couldn’t be luckier than to have a strong partner like Reliance to move forward with this,” bp CEO Murray Auchincloss said at the inauguration of the 500th charging station and 5000th charging point.
