Bosch unveils finely tuned drive for e-mountain bikes

Bosch presented the new generation of its drive for e-mountainbikes. The improved Performance Line CX is set to score points with new components and further fine-tuning. Bosch describes its drive as "more dynamic, more agile and quieter than ever before."

Bosch introduced the first drive unit for e-mountain bikes almost ten years ago – since then, the drive has undergone several stages of evolution. The German manufacturer now presented the latest version. The Performance Line CX now boasts 600 watts of maximum power, 85 Nm of torque and up to 340 per cent support. For energy storage, Bosch has developed the PowerTube 800, which is customised for the new Performance Line CX. At around 205 Wh/kg, the battery has the highest energy density in the portfolio. Alternatively, the slightly smaller PowerTube 600 is available. The numbers in the product name stand for the watt hours.

Bosch states that both batteries use battery cells with an optimised energy density and a newly developed aluminium housing. “Thanks to their identical length, they can be easily removed and replaced – if provided for by the eBike manufacturer. They are also DualBattery-capable and can be combined,” the company says. Moreover, “eMTB enthusiasts, for example, can use two PowerTube 800s to achieve a total capacity of 1,600 Wh.”

The manufacturer also promises more precise fine-tuning. That is made possible by an improved interpretation of several high-performance sensors that precisely measure the pedal input – more than 1,000 times per second, according to Bosch. Specifically, the sensor technology includes a high-resolution cadence sensor, torque measurement technology and inertial sensors (IMU) that measure acceleration and rotation rates in six dimensions and recognise incline and decline angles as well as vibrations.

“Thanks to the sensors, the eMTB knows how steep the slope is and provides optimum support,” Bosch explains. Bosch engineers have also reduced the noise and weight of the Drive Unit. In addition, the manufacturer cites optimised braking performance (‘Bosch eBike ABS Pro’), a new hill start aid and an improved pushing aid as further features of the new drive generation. The Performance Line CX is also flanked by various riding modes that can be selected and customised via the app (‘eBike Flow App’).

“The new Performance Line CX (BDU384Y) delivers the ideal balance of power, dynamics, efficiency and range,” said Claus Fleischer, CEO of Bosch eBike Systems. “Whether for sensitive starts on steep trails or powerful, perfectly controlled exits from bends: With its precise, sensitive response behaviour, our new drive unit allows sporty eBikers to experience unique riding dynamics for the perfect eMTB experience.”
