Dongfeng launches aerodynamic electric saloon

Chinese automotive group Dongfeng is launching a new electric saloon called the Xinghai S7 with its brand Forthing. The electric car is said to be the most aerodynamic production EV worldwide - and is expected to come to Europe.

A 56.8 LFP battery powers the 160 kW rear-wheel drive system, which provides 310 Nm of torque. According to the manufacturer, the EV accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 6.67 seconds, while the CLTC range is 555 kilometres. In addition to the all-electric version, a variant with a range extender (EREV) is rumoured to be released later.

In China, the Xinghai S7 will now be sold in three versions at prices between 119,800 and 139,800 yuan (approx. 15,300 and 17,900 euros).

With a drag coefficient of 0.191, the Xinghai S7 is said to be the most aerodynamic production electric car in the world, at least according to Dongfeng. That means that the car just undercuts the Xpeng Mona M03, which has a drag coefficient of 0.194. Dongfeng apparently sees the latter as an important competitor to the Xinghai S7 in other respects as well. This can already be seen in the pricing, as Car News China notes and recognises certain similarities in the price list.

Both Evs have a similar style. The Xinghai S7 is 4.935 metres long and has a wheelbase of 2.915 metres. Although the Xinghai S7 is significantly larger than the Xpeng Mona M03, the boot capacity is much smaller at 541 litres compared to 621 litres for the Xpeng.

The Xinghai S7 comes with hidden door handles and low-drag wheel covers – design features that help reduce the drag coefficient. The car is available with 19- or 20-inch wheels. From the B-pillar, the roofline begins to descend in an almost coupé-like shape.

The interior can be ordered in either Oriental White or Sky Twilight Black. At the front, the car has a 15.6-inch infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch instrument display. The infotainment system runs on the Xinghai OS system, which reportedly supports gestures and continuous voice commands. It also offers 4G and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The manufacturer’s website states that the car has an EU certificate and will be “exported to many countries.” In addition, Forthing was one of the exhibitors at the IAA in Munich last year, emphasising its plans to expand into Europe. Dongfeng has also announced the launch of its Voyah and Mhero brands in Germany.
