According to a report by Czech Radio, THMP wants to significantly increase the number of charging points for electric cars in Prague. The goal is to create over a thousand lamppost charging points, each with a parking space reserved for electric cars, by 2026. At the start of the project, 13 such lamppost chargers were already installed in the Vinohrady district of Prague. The company name THMP stands for Technologie hlavního města Prahy, which translates as ‘Technology of the Capital City of Prague’.

“The project is mainly taking place underground for the moment because the five and a half thousand kilometres of Prague’s roads mean that it is necessary to get an appropriately thick electric cable of the appropriate power to those charging points, and that is the focus of this current project,” explained Tomáš Jílek, Managing Director of THMP to Radio Prague International.

THMP manages and serves as a service partner for a wide range of technical equipment in the Czech metropolis. In addition to public lighting, the employees maintain traffic lights, public clocks, the city camera system, traffic and telematics systems, and public transport stops. THMP is also active in the e-mobility and photovoltaics sectors.

However, the Czech Republic is lagging behind the EU when it comes to the transport transition. According to the radio report, there were only around 2,400 charging stations and 22,000 purely electric cars in the entire country by the end of 2023. “In 2023, Czechia had a higher proportion of car sales with diesel engines than any other EU country, while it came second to last in the number of electric cars sold,” the report said.
