Denza officially launches Denza Z9 in China

After pre-sales started about a month ago, Denza's new all-electric shooting brake Z9 GT is now on sale in China for 354,800 yuan (about 45,500 euros). Only the entry-level PHEV variant is cheaper, starting at about 43,000 euros.

The EV is equipped with three electric motors (one at the front and two at the rear), offereing a total of 710 kW. The drive unit on the front axle delivers 230 kW, the two units on the rear axle 240 kW each. That makes a total output of 710 kW.

There are two battery-electric variants available, as well as three PHEV versions. There are also two limited first editions, the Denza Z9 GT PHEV Max LFE and the Denza Z9 GT PHEV Ultra LFE. These are limited to 2010 units.

All variants have all-wheel drive. The BEV version should have a range of 630 kilometres on one charge and accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 3.4 seconds. You can read all the details about the different variants in this previous article.

Denza would also like to bring the Z9 GT to Europe at a later date. This was already indicated by the public demonstration of a prototype in Stuttgart in the spring. At the time, BYD said: “The new model will play a central role in the global sales of Denza and BYD.” The Z9 GT was designed by Wolfgang Egger, the former chief designer at Audi and current head of design at BYD.

Since pre-sales started in August, Mercedes-Benz officially ended its partnership with the Chinese carmaker. In fact, it already sold its remaining 10 per cent stake in July 2024.

Denza was originally a 50-50 joint venture between BYD and Daimler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group). The German car manufacturer reduced its stake in Denza to 10 per cent in 2021, apparently due to weak sales figures and the direction of Denza, among other things. Since then, BYD has held a 90 per cent stake in Denza and is now positioning it as a global high-end brand.
