LGES launches new brand for battery management
The name “B.around” for LGES’ new brand for total battery management solutions (BMTS) marks the battery giant’s push into the BMTS business. LGES has announced a strategy to explore new business areas that go beyond battery manufacturing to increase customer value and promote safer use of batteries.
Battery management systems (BMS) utilise various battery-related data to examine the condition of the battery and ensure optimal performance and safe usage. LG Energy Solution’s BMTS differs from traditional BMS services in that it offers more advanced solutions with comprehensive and enhanced features ranging from safety and battery diagnostic software to customised solutions for software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms, according to the company.
B.around’s brand slogan, “Be Around Your Side,” is intended to emphasise the company’s determination to be close to its customers to offer them a safe and comfortable battery experience, as well as signalling the company’s proximity to customer needs.
Targeted at global car manufacturers, B.around’s offering is also designed to provide more advanced features than existing BMS that only provide fragmented functionality to measure battery voltage, current and temperature and constantly monitor various other conditions to ensure safe and optimized battery usage. The B.around product range includes BMS software, BMS hardware and solutions for software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms.
The BMS software from B.around is divided into two types: safety diagnostic software that preemptively detects abnormal signs that indicate potential future problems, such as thermal events, and alerts the user; and battery degradation diagnostic software that examines and predicts the future capacity of a battery to promote longer and healthier use. Based on this software, the company also offers BMS hardware with advanced features.
“LG Energy Solution is the only battery manufacturer to provide a management service for the battery’s entire lifecycle, including BMS solutions,” said Brandon Kim, Head of the BaaS Business Development Department at LG Energy Solution. “Like B.around’s brand vision, our goal is to always be close by so that we can provide differentiated customer value based on the technological capabilities we have accumulated over the decades.”
In March 2024, LGES said it wanted to improve battery management with the help of Qualcomm. The two companies said at the time, they wanted to combine LG Energy Solution’s battery diagnostic software with certain features and functionalities of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis platform. This should, “leverage more than 80 times compute power and additional artificial intelligence (AI) processing blocks of Snapdragon Digital Chassis System-on-Chips,” according to a statement from the companies at the time. The resulting BMS solution should be offered to customers, including global car manufacturers, although the partners did not specify when it will be ready for series production.
LGES’ BMTS technologies were developed based on empirical data obtained by disassembling and analysing more than 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 battery modules. The company’s BMS software has been deployed on more than 100,000 electric vehicles, achieving a safety detection accuracy of over 90 per cent and a battery diagnostic failure rate in the range of 1 per cent. The company also holds over 8,000 BMS-related patents.
