US earmarks billions in funding for domestic battery value creation
According to a statement from the US Department of Energy (DOE), the money has been allocated to 25 projects in 14 states. This is meant to “boost America’s manufacturing base, create good-paying union jobs all over the country, and help tackle the climate crisis,” said John Podesta, Senior Advisor to President Biden for International Climate Policy. The funds will be allocated via the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC).
The current investment round follows an earlier funding round in which the DOE awarded 1.82 billion dollars to 14 projects. In total, the ‘Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling Program’ has a budget of 16 billion dollars for the production, processing, and recycling of batteries. Further funding rounds will thus follow soon.
Among the beneficiaries of the current round are Ascend Elements, Group14 Technologies, and Sila Nanotechnologies. A complete list of the funded projects is linked below this text. According to the MESC, technical, safety-oriented and economic market analyses are the basis for assessing the need for funding “to identify gaps and growth opportunities across the nation’s energy supply chains.”
“We’re in the midst of a manufacturing revival in the United States as the Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda continues to breathe new life into communities and local economies across the country,” said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “By positioning the US at the forefront of advanced battery manufacturing, we are creating high-paying jobs and strengthening our global economic leadership and domestic energy security, all while supporting the clean energy transition.”
