Peugeot introduces large battery for e-3008 and e-5008
The two electric SUVs are based on the new Stellantis STLA Medium platform and use battery cells from the ACC joint venture (along with TotalEnergies and Mercedes-Benz). That means the battery cells come from France, which is home to ACC’s only operational factory at present. The timetable for the plants in Kaiserslautern and Termoli in Italy is uncertain.
The French also provide further details in the current press release, in which Peugeot announces the world premiere of the long-range version at the Paris Motor Show (14 to 20 October). The battery’s previous was 98 kWh, whereas now it is 98 kWh. On the other hand, it does confirm the previously provisional WLTP range of 700 kilometres for the e-3008; the larger e-5008 can go up to 668 kilometres on one charge, according to WLTP.
Peugeot specifies the maximum DC charging power of the long-range battery at 160 kW – the STLA Medium is a pure 400-volt platform. Even though other models in this size class offer higher peak charging capacities, the Peugeot seems to be able to maintain the 160 kW for a relatively long time – the charging time from 20 to 80 per cent is 27 minutes. However, a direct comparison with the competition is not possible, as Stellantis specifies the charging time from 20 to 80 per cent – and not the usual ten to 80 per cent.
The two models will go on sale with the additional designation ‘230.’ The large battery is combined with a 170 kW electric motor, and the power output corresponds to 230 hp, which gives the car its name. The versions with the 73 kWh battery will be powered by a 157 kW motor (213 PS) and are sold with the code number’ 210.’ Both battery sizes will also benefit from a new preconditioning system for shorter charging times on long journeys, which will be announced with the market launch of the new long-range batteries.
The new battery option is 15 millimetres thicker than the 73 kWh battery. According to the manufacturer, the STLA Medium is designed as a ‘BEV-by-design’ platform, so the space available in the interior and boot is not affected. The 4.54-metre-long e-3008, with its wheelbase of 2.73 metres, is a relatively compact car, considering its battery has an energy content of almost 100 kWh.
Peugeot has yet to announce prices for the two long-range models. In Germany, the e-3008 210 with a 73-kWh battery starts at 48,650 euros in the Allure trim, while the e-5008 210 will cost at least 51,150 euros – also in the Allure trim. This equipment level is also offered with the larger battery – prices are likely to rise by several thousand euros.
