UK: Shell opens first electric truck charging station

Shell has installed a 400 kW DC charger at the Markham Moor truckstop in Nottinghamshire, UK. It offers two charging connections and is reserved for electric trucks.

Moreover, Shell offers ‘book and charge,’ meaning operators can reserve a charging bay ahead of time. This site in particular is passed by more than 8,000 heavy-duty trucks per day – albeit not all electric. Of those, there are about 300 in the entire UK.

But back to the charger: It has two connections, so it can charge two electric trucks simultaneously with 200 kW each. The plug is presumably CCS, as the megawatt charging system (MCS) is not officially a standard yet. There is no mention of whether the site is MCS-ready.

The site is open 24/7 and features amenities including a café, 24/7 toilets, showers, and guarded parking. Charging can be paid for with the Shell Card.

“The future of commercial road transport will look mostly electric. That electric future is already coming to fruition in the UK,” said Euan Moir, Head of UK Fleet Solutions at Shell. “Providing a seamless charging experience for drivers at Shell Markham Moor is another step in helping transport companies continue to operate efficiently during the energy transition.”
