GM customers get access to Tesla Superchargers

General Motors is now offering its electric car customers access to more than 17,800 Tesla Superchargers in North America. However, a GM-approved NACS adapter is required for Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC electric models to plug in. The adapter is available for $225.

At the end of last month, the New York Times reported that there were still problems with the software required for third parties to use the Supercharger network and that the delivery of the required adapters was delayed. More than a year has passed since the first car manufacturers announced that they would use NACS in North America to offer their customers access to the Supercharger network. Now, at least GM seems to be moving forward.

Initially, however, only customers in the US will be able to purchase the NACS adapter for 225 US dollars. Later this year, it will also be offered in Canada. However, General Motors does not specify an exact date. As InsideEVs reports, GM, like Ford and Rivian, purchases adapters directly from Tesla. In addition to the US car manufacturer, however, GM is getting adapters from other (unnamed) suppliers to meet demand.

With the NACS adapter, drivers of Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC EVs will be able to use over 17,800 Tesla Superchargers in North America. The same app that can be used to purchase the adapter will also be used to locate Superchargers, check their status, start the charging process and make payments. Charging stations from other companies that rely on NACS can also be used with the adapter.

According to General Motors, the addition of the Supercharger network will give its customers access to more than 231,800 AC and DC charging stations in North America. However, it will not stop there. “GM’s ongoing efforts to help accelerate the expansion of public charging infrastructure is an integral part of our commitment to an all-electric future,” said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy. “Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless.” Just a few days ago, the Group announced its intention to build so-called “flagship” charging parks together with EVgo.
