New EV embodies Lotus’ sports car vision

Lotus has unveiled the study of a purely electric high-performance sports car. The Theory 1 is a three-seater racing car with a 736 kW all-wheel drive. Lotus wants the concept to be seen as the embodiment of its vision of future intelligent high-performance vehicles.

Geely subsidiary Lotus presents the Theory 1 as a design pioneer that will form the basis for all future Lotus vehicles. That includes a lightweight design based on fewer materials than usual. The three-seater, which can reach speeds of up to 320 kph, should thus weigh less than 1,600 kilograms. According to Lotus, the Theory 1, with its all-wheel drive, delivers up to 736 kW. Acceleration from 0-100 kph is said to take less than 2.5 seconds. The battery has a capacity of 70 kWh.

The Theory 1 is not a near-production prototype, but is intended to serve as a model for Lotus’ research and development programmes. In this respect, the focus is less on the drive itself and more on new exterior and interior solutions. The concept’s new approaches include 3D-printed headrests with an integrated audio system and so-called “robotic textile material,” which transmit signals to the car’s occupants via the steering wheel or seats. In addition, material innovations are designed to reduce weight, and new aerodynamic and cooling systems ensure greater dynamics. For example, the front of the vehicle features an eye-catching diffuser and air deflectors adapted from motorsport.

According to Ben Payne, Vice President of Design at the Lotus Group, the company is building on everything Lotus has achieved in its 76-year history with the Theory 1. “We want to demonstrate that you don’t need to compromise – with both digital and analogue capabilities working harmoniously in the future car,” he said. “In doing this, we are able to bring drivers the best possible immersive driving experience with raw emotion, functionality and connectivity, at the core.”
