Fontaine Modification will assemble the FC truck at its facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Hyzon will supply the necessary kits for the fuel cell system, the battery pack, and the hydrogen storage systems.

The Hyzon HyHD8-200 has an output of 450 kW peak (275 kW continuous) and a range of up to 350 miles. According to the company, it can be refuelled in 15 minutes at 350 bar. It also has a 110-kWh battery pack and can carry up to 50 kg of hydrogen. As Hyzon only provides the fuel cell system, the chassis is a Freightliner Cascadia Day Cab 116 or 126 Day Cab P4.

“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for ‘hard-to-decarbonize’ heavy-duty industries, as Hyzon sets the standard for high-performance, zero-emission alternatives to diesel,” said Hyzon Chief Executive Officer Parker Meeks. “Our Class 8 200kW FCET is the culmination of years of engineering, and today we are proud to announce it has evolved from a prototype to a vehicle ready for full production, empowering fleet operators to reduce emissions without sacrificing power, range, or reliability.”

Moreover, the company says it is ready to announce the start of production of “its unique single stack 200kW Fuel Cell System (FCS) at its Bolingbrook facility” in the coming weeks. According to Hyzon, it is “the only 200kW plus single-stack fuel system to be launched into serial production.”

The system was first announced in 2022. It is said to enable 20 per cent more range per kilogram of hydrogen compared to the 120 kW system, significantly improving the total cost of ownership of H2 trucks. In addition, since only one stack is needed for the 200 kW output instead of two, volume and weight are said to be reduced by about 30 per cent and costs by 25 per cent. In addition, the company says there are lower maintenance requirements.
