JSW MG launches Windsor as India’s first BaaS electric car

JSW MG, MG's joint venture company in India, has launched a new electric car called Windsor. The company offers it in a battery-as-a-service (BaaS) ownership model, a first for an electric car in the country.

The JSW MG Windsor costs 999,000 rupees (approximately €10,700) in the base configuration, at least during the introductory period. On top of the vehicle price, JSW MG will charge customers ₹3.5 (approximately €0.4) per kilometre for the battery subscription. That means the BaaS ownership programme is a mileage-based plan rather than a commonly seen time-based (monthly/yearly) subscription.

JSW MG does not include the cost of the battery pack in the Windsor’s listing price, making the EV more affordable and thus accessible to a wider range of customers. The company will disclose how the pay-as-you-go battery subscription payment will work closer to the market launch. Moreover, the carmaker gives first owners a lifetime warranty on the battery pack, which is another industry-first in the country.

The Windsor has a permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 100 kW and 200 Nm of torque that drives its front wheels. This motor is powered by a 38 kWh LFP battery pack featuring a segment-first heating function. The car’s range is 331 km, which is not confidence-inspiring for long journeys.

The EV can be charged with a maximum of 45 kW. At the 7.4 kW AC charger, it takes 6.5 hours to completely charge the battery, while with a 50 kW DC charger, it can complete a 0-80% charging session in 55 minutes.

The Windsor is essentially a restyled version of the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture’s Baojun Yun Duo/Wuling Cloud. JSW MG applied black wheel arch cladding to the compact hatchback and markets it as an electric crossover utility vehicle (CUV) in India. The company offers the black cladding on the front bumper, the body side moulding, and the roof rail garnish, which give the EV a slightly more rugged look. The offset black element on the bonnet is also just a styling element, not an air scoop.

JSW MG aims to attract Indian customers to the Windsor electric CUV with several eye-catching styling and convenience features. The company uses an illuminated brand logo at the front and also full-width light stripes at the front and rear. Additionally, it says the Windsor is the first model in its segment to feature 18-inch alloy wheels and a glass antenna. The new EV features flush-fitted door handles as well, which is still a novelty among mainstream cars in India.

The Windsor has a flat floor and offers loads of passenger space, even in the back. Indian customers place a strong emphasis on rear-seat space and comfort when making their purchase decisions. Features like sunroof, virtual instrument cluster, and large touchscreen infotainment systems, are trending features and also play a role in the car selection. JSW MG equips the new EV with a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, a reclining rear seat, a panoramic glass roof, a 15.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system, an 8.8-inch LCD driver information display, and many more attractive features.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are also trending in India, but JSW MG has ignored that aspect. The Windsor offers safety features such as six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and a 360-degree camera system.

JSW MG has started taking pre-orders for the Windsor and will begin accepting confirmed orders on 3 October. The company plans to commence deliveries on 12 October.
