In total, the state will have 109 million dollars to build DC chargers for electric vehicles along designated alternative fuel corridors.

In this first round, eCAMION USA received two times 644,913 dollars to set up DC chargers in Williamston and Elizabeth City. Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores will have 600,000 dollars for its site Marion, while Schneider Electric Buildings Americas was awarded $1,090,841 to set up chargers in Charlotte. Francis Energy Charging hat 991,421 dollars for its location in Leland. EvGateway will install chargers in New Bern, for which it was granted 586,460 dollars, and Joansville, for which the grant amounts to 578,900 dollars. Pilot Travel Centers will operate EV chargers in Warsaw and Candor, receiving $333,414 and $453,630, respectively.

It is not clear how many stations will be installed at each location. However, all of them will be commissioned next year and, according to NEVI requirements, will each offer “four combined ports capable of charging EVs in about 20 minutes.” This is still Phase 1 of the NEVI rollout, for which N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) still accepts proposals.

“This is an exciting start, but there’s so much more to come for clean transportation,” said Governor Cooper. “By expanding the EV charging network, all North Carolinians will be able to choose transportation options that are more efficient, more affordable and better for our environment.”

“We’re working to maximize the use of the available funds to build out an efficient network of chargers,” said Joey Hopkins, NCDOT secretary. “Eventually, we’ll have publicly-funded EV chargers that fill in coverage gaps along our major corridors in the state and in our communities. We want a network that is reliable and easily accessible for people in rural and urban areas.”
