GM & EVgo expand charging partnership in the USA

General Motors and EVgo are expanding their charging infrastructure partnership. The two companies want to build 400 new fast-charging points with up to 350 kW capacity at covered ‘flagship’ locations in major metropolitan regions in the USA. The first charging park is scheduled to go into operation in 2025.

“The new stations will often utilise EVgo’s prefabrication approach in order to shorten the construction time and use the modularity for future expansions,” both companies announced. Most of the planned charging parks will initially offer up to 20 charging stations. However, more charging options could also be available at selected locations.

However, it is not clear from the press releases how the 400 planned fast-charging points will be distributed among the individual locations in detail. Nor does it say how many locations are planned at all. It only states that they are to be spread from coast to coast, including in metropolitan regions in states such as Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New York and Texas.

General Motors and EVgo have announced that the charging parks, which will be monitored by cameras, will be illuminated and covered. Charging bays for caravans are also planned. However, as Dennis Kish, President of EVgo, acknowledged, this equipment is unlikely to be the end of the story. “In order to be the charging provider of choice, we need to lead on customer satisfaction, and we will continue to innovate to deliver a charging experience that is convenient, comfortable, and dependable for current and future EV drivers,” said Kish. “Through our collaborations with industry leaders like EVgo, we continue to innovate and expand customer-centric charging solutions that will meet the evolving needs of EV drivers across the country,” added Wade Sheffer, Vice President of GM Energy.

The first site is scheduled to go into operation in 2025, however the exact date is not specified. There is also no information on when the project is due to be completed.

In addition to the agreement on the construction of the flagship charging parks, EVgo and GM intend to continue their collaboration on the expansion of charging infrastructure in metropolitan regions. The companies plan to build a total of 2,850 HPC charging points, “with funding reallocated to deliver premium charging experiences for EV drivers at flagship locations.” However, neither EVgo nor GM go into more detail. In August 2023, both companies celebrated the opening of the 1,000th fast-charging point and a total of 2,000 charging points are to be in operation by the end of 2024.
