The buses were delivered by manufacturer Nova Bus and have a range of 225 kilometres. There is no information about the exact model, but DTR says, they will be used “on routes with high rider volume and long cycle times.”

The buses and corresponding infrastructure are funded with $12.1 million from the Canada Community-Building Fund. Moreover, DRT signed a credit agreement with the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) to purchase another 98 electric buses. The transport operator hopes to cut all its CO2 emissions by 2037.

“These new electric buses are a critical step in our journey towards a zero-emission future. By reducing transit vehicle emissions, we are fostering a healthier, more sustainable Durham Region for generations to come,” says John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer.

“We are grateful for the federal government’s partnership in making this project a reality,” adds Regional Councillor Marilyn Crawford, Chair of the Transit Executive Committee. “The Canada Community-Building Fund and the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s support are vital in Durham Region Transit’s transition to a green transit fleet.”
