MAN supplies Munich Airport with electric bus fleet
A year ago, Munich Airport announced that its entire vehicle fleet is to be locally emission-free by 2030. By the end of 2024, half of the conversion should already be complete. With this in mind, MAN has now handed over ten Lion’s City E 12 solo buses for use on the airport apron. A further 27 electric buses are due to go into operation before the end of the year, specifically a mix of 12 and 18-metre vehicles from MAN. There is also an option for 25 more.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH (FMG), believes that the electric drive is particularly efficient for apron operations with many short distances and low speeds: “We are reducing air pollutants, lowering our energy consumption and avoiding climate-damaging CO2 emissions. The changeover is a further step towards sustainable airport operations and a clean future for the aviation industry. The buses also offer passengers a more comfortable journey from the gate to the aircraft.”
According to an airport press release, the charging infrastructure for electric buses on the apron is currently being expanded. In future, 40 charging points from the company SBRS will be available at the airport. The charging service department of the Munich-based truck manufacturer, MAN Transport Solutions, has been commissioned with the installation. The procurement of electric buses and the infrastructure was subsidised with a total of 23.8 million euros as part of the now discontinued federal funding for alternatively powered buses. However, the funding commitment covers not only the current MAN order, but also a total of 72 battery buses and the associated maintenance and charging infrastructure.
