BYD upgrades Han sedan to 800-volt architecture
According to Chinese media reports, BYD has presented the 2025 model year of its flagship Han at an event. The electric saloon has been on the market since July 2020 and has already received several major updates over the past four years. According to CNEVPost, BYD is now switching to an 800-volt system architecture – with the exception of the basic version, which remains at 400 volts. In principle, BYD is also offering the new model year as a BEV and a PHEV. In future, however, the plug-in hybrid will use BYD’s latest PHEV system DM 5.0, which should enable an electric range of 125 kilometres according to CLTC.
The Han is therefore coming with technical updates, but BYD is also adjusting the price: while the basic BEV version is still available for 179,800 yuan (equivalent to around 22,900 euros), all other variants will be cheaper. In future, the prices for the new plug-in hybrid models will range from 165,800 to 225,800 yuan (around 21,100 to 28,700 euros), while the battery-electric versions will be priced from 179,800 to 235,800 yuan (around 22,900 to 30,000 euros).
When it comes to the technical drive details, the information on the new Han is becoming increasingly sparse. There are said to be ‘various battery options’ that allow ranges of between 506 and 701 kilometres according to the Chinese test cycle. The batteries are said to be the latest generation of BYD’s Blade batteries, which are LFP batteries that can be charged to 80 per cent in 30 minutes. The drive power is not specified. The sprint from 0 to 100 kph should take 7.9 seconds.
For the back of your mind: the current Han has an LFP battery with 85.4 kWh on board and delivers up to 380 kW as an all-wheel drive. This version reaches 100 kph in 3.9 seconds. The DC peak power is 120 kW, which on paper means that the charge level can be brought from 30 to 80 per cent in 30 minutes.
There are no changes to the dimensions: The Han continues to measure 4,995 mm in length, 1,910 mm in width and 1,495 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920 mm. The exterior modifications are moderate. According to Car News China, there is a new colour option (Fashion Grey) and the variants receive a similar front design with a simplified radiator grille across all powertrains. More noteworthy is that there is a LiDAR option for the model for the first time.
Incidentally, the last update of BYD’s flagship model took place at the end of February with the introduction of the Han Glory Edition at a starting price of 169,800 yuan (for the PHEV). That was 20,000 yuan less than before. In total, BYD is said to have sold around 800,000 units since the launch of the Han.
