Germany: Barth Logistics Group deploys first electric trucks in local transport

The Barth Logistics Group has put four electric trucks from Renault Trucks into operation. Since the end of August, the E-Tech D16 4x2s have been used in local transport for general cargo.

The 16-tonne truck, which has only been available in all-electric form since 2021, is available in numerous variants. Depending on requirements, the wheelbase can be between 3.80 and 6.50 metres, while the energy content of the installed batteries can also vary between 200 and 565 kWh. In the latter case, a WLTP range of up to 560 kilometres is possible. Barth opted for a battery capacity of 375 kWh for its four electric trucks and a curtainsider body from Junge Fahrzeugbau.

The Barth Logistics Group is based in Hechingen, in the south of Germany, but has eight locations in the region and two locations in the east of the country. However, the four electric Renault trucks will only be used in southern Germany. Barth announced in a LinkedIn post that the sites in Hechingen, Gundelfingen, Kandel, and Allershausen will each get one electric Renault Truck.

With a range of up to 280 kilometres, they are said to offer “an ideal solution for daily transport requirements” and, thanks to the loading area measuring up to 7.20 metres in length, do not restrict the loading space.

“With the deployment of our four new electric trucks from Renault Trucks, we are taking a step towards a more sustainable transport solution,” says Uwe Schempp, Managing Director of the Barth Logistics Group. “These trucks combine our responsibility for the environment with state-of-the-art technology to take our fleet to the next level. We will install photovoltaic systems in our buildings this year so that electrical energy can be generated from our own systems.”

Frederic Ruesche, Managing Director of Renault Trucks Germany, emphasises the importance of the collaboration: “Only through a partnership approach can we drive forward the decarbonisation of the transport sector. The transition to all-electric logistics solutions is a decisive step in this process. We are delighted that the Barth Logistics Group is taking this path with us.”

Since the start of production of the Renault Trucks E-Tech T and C at the end of November 2023, Renault Trucks has been offering an all-electric range from three to 44 tonnes. However, the 16-tonne E-Tech D remains one of the bestsellers.
