Allego to introduce Plug&Charge before the end of 2024

Fast-charging provider Allego has announced the imminent nationwide roll-out of its Plug&Charge technology based on OCPP 2.0.1. The fast-charging operator will begin activating Plug&Charge in its European charging network in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Allego’s Plug&Charge technology will offer “increased security and compatibility with future EV and charging technologies” via OCPP 2.0.1, the company said. “This rollout represents the safest Plug & Charge implementation on the market and was made possible by Allego’s collaboration with industry leaders such as Alpitronic and Ford.”

Plug&Charge is based on special certificates that enable authentication and billing of charging processes without an RFID card or app. Customers only need to connect their electric car to the charging station using the cable. The company says that beyond simplifying the payment process and standardising the charging procedure across different networks and regions, Allego’s Plug&Charge technology will also increase convenience for drivers beyond the Allego network. The rollout will start in the Netherlands and Germany in Q4, before gradually rolling out to other markets.

Guillaume Goijen, Director of Charging Solutions & Site Design at Allego, said, “This technology streamlines the charging process and ensures that every session is secure and tamper-proof, thanks to our implementation of certificate-based authentication with encrypted communication.”
