Swiss Post expands electric-only operation to Basel

The Swiss Post has expanded its electric-vehicle-only operations to the city and canton of Basel. This is now the fourth city in Switzerland to be exclusively served by battery-electric postal delivery vehicles.

The Swiss Post recently began delivering letters and parcels entirely electrically in the canton of Basel-Stadt (the city itself) and certain neighbouring municipalities in the Basel region. This makes Basel the fourth city in Switzerland where only electric vehicles are employed by the Postal service.

As the next step, the Swiss Post writes “It is also planned that parcels and letters will be delivered exclusively with e-vehicles in Bienne, Lucerne and Winterthur from 2025, with Lausanne and Lugano to follow.”

At the beginning of the year, the Swiss Post kicked off its decarbonization efforts with the addition of 660 electric vehicles to its fleet, as well as electrifying its entire operations in Geneva. Before that, the company had achieved the same results in Bern and Zurich, as reported in February 2023. The current Swiss Post fleet stands at 1,100 delivery vans, although “new vehicles are being added practically every day.”

By 2030, the company plans to use electric vehicles for all of its deliveries, as Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services at Swiss Post explained: “We have made a commitment to deliver mail CO2-free throughout Switzerland from 2030. Electrified delivery in Basel is our first significant step on this journey.”
