Suzuki’s electric SUV is coming to Europe
It is no coincidence that the eVX will debut at the trade fair in India: Suzuki plans to have the model manufactured in the country by Maruti Suzuki for the global markets. The vehicle will go on sale in India later – there as the Maruti eVX.
However, after the start of series production at the beginning of 2025, the focus will be on other markets, as Autocar India reports. In a conversation with analysts, an unnamed senior executive at the company reportedly said: “We will officially announce the BEV [born electric vehicle] at the Auto Expo in India in January next year, and hope to launch it in early 2025.”
No further data on the production version is mentioned in the article. That means there is still yet to be an indication of how Suzuki will price the model in the competitive environment of compact SUVs. With a length of 4.30 metres, a width of 1.80 metres and a height of 1.60 metres, the eVX study presented in 2023 is slightly larger than a VW ID.3, to use a model widely used in Europe as a comparison. The eVX is four centimetres taller than the ID.3. The production version will probably only differ by a few centimetres.
The same could also apply to the battery. The study mentioned an energy content of 60 kWh, but there was no further information on whether this is a gross or net value. In addition, an all-wheel drive is supposedly set in stone, but here, too, there is no further information.
Although Maruti Suzuki is building a pure electric car plant with a capacity of up to one million vehicles per year in the Indian state of Gujarat, this factory is not scheduled to go into operation until 2028/2029. However, it can already build electric cars at the existing plant in Gujarat, where capacities are also being expanded.
When series production starts in India at the beginning of next year, all units will initially be exported. The further rollout plan after the launch in Europe and Japan is not yet known. As the vehicle was developed in close cooperation with Toyota, according to Autocar India, a Toyota version of the eVX will also be available at a later date. But here again, the timetable is still unclear.
