Kempower builds truck charging stations for logistics company DFDS

Charger manufacturer Kempower has received an order from logistics company DFDS to build fast chargers for electric trucks at its depots. The first hubs have already been set up in the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden.

Both parties have agreed to provide chargers ‘upon request’ – in other words, no fixed number of charging stations will be built. Instead, DFDS can decide according to its needs. According to the partners, the first projects using Kempower fast-chargers have already been installed at five locations, three in the Netherlands and one each in Belgium and Sweden.

Kempower describes the latest project in more detail. The company expanded a DFDS charging location in Gothenburg, Sweden, so 38 charging points are now available there. This makes it “one of Sweden’s largest eTruck charging depots,” says Kempower. CEO Tomi Ristimäk also describes the collaboration with DFDS as “a significant milestone [that]serves as a strong example of industry leaders working together to accelerate the electrification of transportation.”

Sophie-Kim Chapman, Vice President for Decarbonisation at DFDS, states that her company wants to operate at least a quarter of its fleet battery-electrically by 2030. And: “Collaborating with infrastructure partners such as Kempower is an important step in making this happen.”

DFDS is headquartered in Copenhagen and already operates several electric trucks. In March, the logistics company ordered 100 electric trucks from Volvo Trucks after the Danes had already ordered 125 Volvo FM Electric trucks in 2021 and subsequently put them into service. They are used in Sweden, Denmark, Lithuania, Belgium, and the Netherlands, among other countries.

The new electric trucks ordered in the spring will be used in nine European markets, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, the UK and Ireland. Incidentally, some of the vehicles in Sweden are currently being used by DFDS to transport goods to and from the Volvo Trucks plant in Gothenburg.
