Renault removes the Twingo from the DACH markets
Anyone in Germany, Austria or Switzerland who tries to configure an electric Twingo via the website will find that the model is no longer listed. When asked, a Renault spokesperson explained to electrive that the Twingo Electric was “discontinued as normal in the spring, as it has reached the end of its cycle.”
The German Renault spokesperson also cites requirements relating to the safety regulations of the EU General Safety Regulation II (GSR II) and a change in the model range as reasons for the discontinuation. However, this also means that the French car manufacturer will no longer be offering a small car with an electric drive until 2026.
The successor with its retro look is only due to be built by Renault subsidiary Revoz in Novo Mesto in Slovenia in just over two years’ time, with an annual production target of 150,000 units. The new Twingo will feature many design borrowings from the first generation from the 1990s, as shown in a study unveiled in November last year. In contrast to the previous Twingo, however, the new edition of the small electric car will be available for less than 20,000 euros.
Incidentally, the Twingo Electric can still be found in the French configurator. An enquiry about the background to this resulted in a confirmation that the Twingo is still available to order in France, “for the moment.” The spokesperson further explained: “But Twingo doesn’t fit with the GSR2 requirements, so this model is about to disappear from our configurator also, once all stocks are done.”
