As the STLA Large platform is designed for internal combustion engines, hybrids, and electric motors, the plant in the State of Mexico has not fully been converted to electric vehicle production. However: “This plant has been home to iconic vehicles such as the LeBaron, PT Cruiser, Neon and Jeep Compass, among many others, but today, we have transformed ourselves to accommodate the new STLA Large platform, beginning the shift to the era of electric mobility,” Carlos Quezada, president of Stellantis Mexico said.

The manufacturer invested 1.6 billion dollars in the plant’s modernisation, which is now ready for the production of EVs based on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform. The first electric car to roll off the production line there is the Jeep Wagoneer S. It has 400-volt technology and a battery with an energy content of 100 kWh. Its range is said to be 300 miles.

The EV will first launch in the US and Canada later this year, followed by Brazil, Italy and Mexico. In every case, the car will come from the Toluca plant.

“It is with great pride that I share with you that today the production of the Stellantis electric model ‘Jeep Wagoneer S’ was officially launched at the Toluca plant in the presence of the Secretary of Economy of the Mexican government, Raquel Buenrostro,” Laura González, Secretary of Economic Development of the Government of the State of Mexico, wrote on social media.

Stellantis unveiled the STLA Large platform at the beginning of the year. Designed for large electric vehicles, it was to form the basis for future vehicles in the D and E segments for the global markets. Only later did Stellantis announce that the platform could also be used for hybrids and combustion engines. It can accommodate an  800-volt architecture as well as 400-volt systems
