Nio currently has two factories for the production of battery swapping stations in Kunshan in the Chinese province of Jiangsu and in Hefei in the province of Anhui. According to the CN EV Post portal, the third plant is to be built in Wuhan in the central Chinese province of Hubei and will be operated by the Nio Power division.

Nio has now set a target for China of setting up battery exchange stations in more than 2,300 counties in China’s 27 administrative regions by the turn of the year 2025/26. From 2026, Nio intends to ‘expand the coverage of its network of battery exchange stations to other areas’.

According to the company, there are currently 2,480 battery swap stations, 10,577 Nio fast-charging stations and 12,432 destination chargers in China. Nio had previously announced the construction of 1,000 swap stations in China for the current year, although company CEO William Li indicated in July that the expansion could be somewhat slower than initially planned.

In the meantime, Nio’s station is also being further developed technologically. In June, the company put the first fourth-generation battery exchange station into operation in China. According to the company, the new station is 22 per cent faster than the third generation and can complete a swap in 144 seconds.
