Lucid to expand model lineup to better compete with Tesla

In a media interview, Lucid Senior VP of Design and Brand shed light on the planned more affordable electric cars from Lucid. Three models are currently planned: One competitor each for the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y as well as a third as yet unknown model.

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson had previously mentioned a Model Y competitor in the past, which is to be launched on the market at the end of 2026 at prices of less than 50,000 dollars – the large Lucid Air electric saloon currently starts at 70,000 dollars, but is also available in variants of over 200,000 dollars. It was obvious that this mid-range SUV would also be accompanied by a corresponding saloon (as a counterpart to the Tesla Model 3).

The portal CarBuzz interviewed Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice-President of Design and Brand at Lucid Motors, and learned that the mid-range programme will include three vehicles. “They’re going to be younger vehicles, they’re going to be more athletic vehicles,” Jenkins said. According to the conversation with Jenkins, CarBuzz rules out a station wagon.

Instead, the design and brand manager hints that the ominous third mid-range model could go off-road: “The off-road space is going to continue to morph and evolve. You’re going to have products that are trying to cater to the fringe of off-roading, like rock crawling, and then you have your normal crossover products,” Jenkins added.

However, ‘CarBuzz’ sees the statements as more of a feint – and is itself speculating about an independent sports car as a coupé or convertible, possibly even a small pickup or a Sapphire version of the mid-size saloon.

So far, Lucid Motors has launched the Air, a very efficient premium electric saloon that has attracted a lot of media attention. However, sales have been rather sluggish, which is why the company has repeatedly lowered prices and launched more affordable drive versions. With the large electric SUV Gravity, a second model with this technology is about to be launched on the market. Lucid has developed the vehicles with billions in investment from Saudi Arabia and is also pressing ahead with its factory projects. In addition to production in Arizona, Lucid now also has a plant in Saudi Arabia. It is not yet known where and in what quantities the mid-range models will be built.
