GAC Aion can build electric cars in 53 seconds

GAC Aion has opened its new Changsha plant in central China's Hunan province. It has a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year, which it can allegedly build in an average of 53 seconds.

The first model to roll off the production line there is the second-generation Aion V, which the manufacturer launched in China at the end of July. It is available there from 129,800 yuan (about 16,462 euros). You can read all the details about the electric SUV is this previous article.

But back to the new factory: As mentioned above, the plant has an annual capacity of 200,000 units. In the first month, GAC Aion plant to build 9,000 electric cars. Full production capacity will be reached next year.

According to GAC Aion, it is the first black-light factory in Hunan and supports more than 100,000 customised options. The manufacturer emphasises that it uses comprehensive AI and simulation modelling technologies that shorten the troubleshooting process by 25 per cent and save 30 per cent of the process area. Moreover, the smart logistics system can increase delivery precision by 40 per cent and shorten delivery times by 25 per cent. And speaking of percentages, the factory gets 50 per cent of its energy from photovoltaics.

The manufacturer started construction in October 2023, though not from scratch. GAC Aion took over the plant from GAC Mitsubishi, a joint venture between the GAC Group and Mitsubishi Motors.

This is GAC Aion’s third factory in China. The other two have a combined production capacity of 400,000 vehicles per year, which brings the manufacturer’s total annual production capacity to 600,000 units – in China. The GAC Group subsidiary also opened an assembly plant in Thailand in July, with an annual production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. There, too, the first vehicle to roll off the production line was a GAC Aion V – though the company has said that it will build the right-hand drive version of the Aion Y Plus there.
