Pennsylvania funds charging infrastructure expansion
The funds from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will be used to support ten projects in nine counties across the state that were selected to fill in the final gaps along Pennsylvania’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC) following NEVI Round 1 and Round 1A.
With the exception of Bucks County, each of the locations will see one charging station built, while Bucks County will receive two charging station construction projects, each of them located at shopping locations. Some of the charging projects are aimed at restaurants as well, such as Pizza Hut in Bedford County, or the Kavkaz restaurant in Union County. Funds for the projects range from $601,284 in Allegheny County to $945,555 for a project in Berks County.
“With every investment in EV infrastructure, we make clean transportation options more accessible for Pennsylvanians,” explained PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “These awards will help move us to the next phase of EV rollout.”
Combined with previous projects, the state of Pennsylvania has now committed NEVI funding to a total of 91 projects in 43 countries, with the newest round designed to “fill out” gaps in the ‘Alternative Fuel Corridors’ (AFC). The funds are all part of the the $171.5 million PennDOT will receive and distribute for EV charging infrastructure over five years through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
While all of the current projects are designed to install charging infrastructure in Pennsylvania, the state is also investing in other new energy technologies, such as a small fuel cell bus fleet approved by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority last year. The state also recently saw funding issued by the federal US government in Washington, which is attempting to create a local green economy and has issued funds to help build up production capacities.
