Specifically, the first four units will go to the Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District and one unit to the Terra Bella Union Elementary School District, both of which are located North of Los Angeles. GreenPower adds that it will deliver 25 additional units to California school districts and one all-electric school bus to an Oregon school district in the coming three to four months.

The ‘BEAST’ is a 40-foot Type D school bus with room for up to 90 passengers. Its 194 kWh battery allows the bus to travel up to 150 miles on one charge. It has dual port charging and can charge at Level 2 rates of up to 19.2 kW. It can also fast-charge at up to 85 kW. GreenPower says the electric school bus can be equipped with wireless charging capabilities.

The Canadian manufacturer also offers the Mega Beast, with a 387 kWh battery and up to 300 miles of range, and the smaller Nano Beast. The latter has a battery with an energy content of 118 kWh, a range of 140 kilometres, and room for up to 24 passengers.

“Delivery of our all-electric Type D BEAST school buses in California this week shows the continued preference for GreenPower’s purpose-built product in the marketplace,” said Paul Start, GreenPower Vice President of Sales – School Bus Group. “GreenPower remains the only OEM to manufacture both a Class 4 purpose-built Type A all-electric school bus in its Nano BEAST and a Type D all-electric, purpose-built school bus in its BEAST. This product combination allows school districts to meet its student transportation needs, all while taking full advantage of state incentives and programs.”

California requires all new school buses purchased after 2035 to be zero-emission. State Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill in October 2023, requiring all new school buses purchased after 2035 to be zero-emission. At the time, the US state reported about 23,800 school buses on the road in California. About 500 are already electric, and 2,078 electric buses have been ordered.
